CANCER FOR COLLEGE FAQ
What is Cancer for College?
Cancer for College was formed in 1993 by Craig Pollard as a senior project while at the USC Business School. Craig was a two-time cancer survivor and witnessed first hand the financial impact cancer can have on a family and the hope a college education can provide to a survivor.
Are you a true charity?
Yes, Cancer for College is a registered 501 (c) 3 charitable foundation
What is your Mission?
To provide hope and inspiration to cancer survivors and amputees by providing college scholarships.
Why assist amputees and cancer patients?
No reason other than on top of being a two-time cancer survivor, founder Craig Pollard is also a double amputee having lost both his legs just above the ankle in 2006 as a result of an aggressive bacteria. Many cancer survivors are left with suppressed immune systems as a result of treatments. Always one to turn a negative into a positive, Craig added amputees to the list of potential scholarship recipients shortly there after.
How many scholarships do you provide?
Up until 2008, everyone received something. It might have been $250 toward books, but it was something. Unfortunately, there are now too many applicants to still offer that service. Being a California based charity, California applicants and applicants attending school in Southern California have first consideration on our largest scholarships, the perpetual which as of 2009 was $4,000 per year for four years. We offer other one-time scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $250.
Who can apply?
Any cancer survivor or amputee who is enrolled in an accredited college.
I'm going to school in another country, am I still eligible for a scholarship from Cancer for College?
At this time, we can only provide scholarships to residents of the United States attending school in the US and Puerto Rico.
How did Will Ferrell get involved?
Will and Craig have been friends since their days in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at USC. Will has been a long-time supporter of the charity since its earliest days. As his fame has grown, he's become increasingly generous with time and contributions to the cause. Will serves as the celebrity host to our annual Cancer for College Golf Classic. He also often attends Cancer for College fund raising events.
Can I meet Will?
He is the host of our Golf Classic each year. That is your best bet so sign up here
. Attendees can meet him, shake his hand, get an autograph, tell him a lame story and even take a picture. Sign up to attend our events and it is very likely you will cross paths with Will.
Why Will Ferrell Sunscreen?
Basically, because Will Ferrell is awesome and as the labels say, he's always dreamed of owning a lotion company. We wanted to create a fund raising product that could benefit the charity and capitalize on Will's millions of fans. Will was nice enough to consent to the ridiculous images on the bottles and 100% of the proceeds go to the Cancer for College Scholarship Fund. If you want to buy some click here
or ask your local retailer if they are cool enough to carry our product.
Can my store/retail outlet carry Will Ferrell Susncreen?
